When I started out as Junior Programmer at the
Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board, I was assigned to June who was a Senior Systems Analyst,
But I always thought it was the other way around. She was assigned to look after me. So
from that day onwards, I called her mom.
June was like most moms, she passed on the lessons she had learned and other motherly advice. Confucianism is the foundation of the Chinese
family. It is really no different for other cultures. Unblind Respect for your elders. There is one idiom, respect your elders if they are wise. And I have much respect and admiration for June.
I was about to go after a new position but June said that I should wait and get more seasoned. Fortunately, after working on a slew of
projects, I didn't have to ask.
I know that women don't like to talk about age, But June was a "tad older" than myself and she ran each morning. Well, I didn't know
how much until she came back one weekend. She told me that she had completed the New York Marathon in some 3 hours and change. Everyone was quite impressed. Way to go mom.
I haven't seen mom for some 8 or 9 years. But Mom thanks for looking after me and giving me the confidence to succeed.
