Truism

An idea is just nothing more than a thought. The true value of an idea is being able to bring it to fruition and it being profitable. The later is key!

Lavalife Co-founder

Ed was the creative genius behind Lavalife's Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems, Telepersonals and The Night Exchange. He had been without a doubt, the main driving force for Lavalife's success. This view is shared by the current employees and the Alum alike.

Leading a Business vs Running a Business

He's the only one who really knows the business. The strange thing is that the new paper tigers think they know the business because they're from Fortune xyz company. It's true they might know how to run a business. There is a big difference between ideas and money making ideas. Ed definitely falls into the latter category. You know he still has it.

Simplicity and Passion

I have great admiration for his management style, objectivity in the face of crisis. and common sense. He stuck to the basics, using the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle. His favourite phrase was, "Is it done yet". The tone and manner in which he said it was in a joking way. So it was non-combative and non confrontational. BUT, it did get on your nerves when you were under the crunch of deadlines. The other thing was that he enjoyed kicking things when all wasn't well. Now that I enjoyed. This showed me that he cared about what he did and was passionate about his work and convictions. No matter how frustrated you become, he always asks the right questions in his decision making process. He totally understands the big picture and how the tactical elements are to be used to achieve the objectives.

To reveal the type of boss he was, I'll share this story. Craig Priest and I were called back to work on a Friday because of a server crash. We had worked all night, taking turns sleeping (one to two hour naps). I'll tell you, sleeping on the floor is definitely no joy. On the Saturday, Ed brought us breakfast and PAID for it. Most directors would have just called to see how things were going. Or more commonly, not called at all except the following Monday. We ended up missing the first JAM party but everything was up and running.

New Start

Ed has re-prioritized his life towards his beautiful family, after 10 years of unwaivering dedication growing IMG, Here is truly someone who has achieved what he set out to do under his own terms.

Ed, I thank you for hiring me and for the opportunity of working with you.
