Planning

The Plan

  • Recognize that confidence comes from the planning process, not from the plan itself
  • Your software process drives the development of your plan
  • Start with a coarse-grained plan
  • The doers should be the planners
  • Don't forget the "don't forgets."
  • Document any assumptions and constraints
  • Recognize that different resources imply different plans
  • Create a realistic plan
  • Plan for something only if it adds value
  • Use project management tools appropriately

Scheduling

Scheduling starts with these easy questions for each project team member:

  • What are the tasks that you need to perform?
  • What task must you complete before you can start the next task?
  • Who are you are dependent on and for what?
  • How many hours/days will it take you to complete each task?
  • When can you start?
  • What percentage of your time can you spend on this project?
